Chapter Ten

“What happened, Letty?”

“God!” Letty pressed a hand to her heart, feeling it beat beneath her fingers as the apartment door closed behind her.

Aidan turned on the hallway light and she squinted from the sudden onslaught. I guess this is karma for earlier when I scared him. All she wanted to do was crawl into bed and sleep for the thirty minutes she had left of her night before forcing herself to get ready for work. But Letty doubted that was happening anytime soon with the way was Aidan blocking her path like an unmovable rock, arms crossed across his wide chest. Not that she had been sleeping much when Merry had broken into the apartment. Too much tossing and turning from how hot their truth or truth game had made her.

“Why the hell are you still awake?” She shook her head, knowing she was deflecting, but was going to do it for as long as she could. She really, really didn’t want to have this conversation, especially not when exhaustion made her body feel like it was fifty times heavier and like her thoughts were coming to her through a pile of sludge and in a jumbled-up mess.

“Waiting for you,” he said, his anger coming through loud and clear.

“I’m home now, so...” But Aidan stayed planted in front of her, at least staying a few steps back so she didn’t have to deal with his overwhelming presence.

Great, I guess we’re doing this. Taking off her light black jacket, she hung it up on the hook, catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror—not a stitch of makeup, hair pulled messily back in a bun and a baggy sweater thrown over her sleepwear. She looked older than her age and more like someone with the weight of the world on her shoulders.

“It’s late, Aidan, can’t we talk about this tomorrow?” Or never?

“What happened with your sister, Letty?”

“Nothing.” She blew on her fingers, which were still cold from the outside. “She just needed a favor.”

“At three in the middle of the night?” He raised his eyebrows in disbelief.

I wouldn’t buy it either, but I really need you to stop asking fucking questions.

“The favor wasn’t for her,” Letty said, reluctantly. “It was for our youngest brother, Juan. He sort of got arrested.”

“For what?” Aidan demanded.

“Drunk driving.”

His jaw ticked at the news. It isn’t as if I’m happy about it either. She didn’t ask for any of these things to happen, but they did and so she acted like an adult and took care of it. Her parents had and still did spoil their kids from their second marriages, always leaving Letty to play the authoritarian bad guy. When Maria was twelve and had broken Ava’s vase, Letty had been the one to tell her to be more responsible while her stepmother had soothed and mopped up her tears, telling Maria it didn’t matter because Letty could go out and buy another one. They needed Letty because their parents were going to coddle them to death.
